The Leading Aphrodisiac

One of the most difficult things a person will ever attempt is to find another person to spend the rest of their life with. It is an ancient search and need, and also one of the greatest challenges any individual faces along their life. It might seem, on the surface, that in today´s society finding a partner for life would be simple. Nowadays we, usually, no longer have economic or social barriers stopping people from interacting with each other. However, I maintain that more men today cannot find a girlfriend, and it has to do precisely with this newfound social freedom.

It is never this easy.

This opportunity to choose and this, seemingly, endless choice is exactly part of the problem. In olden times, one need only find someone suitable and akin to one´s social and economic background and needs and the rest was arranged. There is no doubt many people must have led unhappy lives, but on the whole there was no wondering how much love is enough love. The idea of the romantic is attractive, but highly impractical (which is why the best love stories live in stories, not in real life).

Because of this, dating coaches are immensely popular in today´s world. It might surprise some people, but they are even more common among men. Women, being the gender that was recently liberated (in the last 100 years), is still attempting to control the situation but men, because they no longer simply choose but must be chosen in return, find themselves lost at sea.

As with everything else in life there are good and honest people truly trying to share their positive dating experiences with others; just as there are the deceptive and petty. Here we focus on the good and honest, and would like to refer to an interesting corner of the Internet: Organic Seduction. Here, you may find some good and honest advice about dating and getting a girlfriend, in spite of the fact that the name sounds more like a product, it only offers one thing: advice. Good and honest advice.

What kind of advice? For more details you may, of course, refer to the page directly but here we will mention the emphasis made on being honest and true to yourself. Honesty, in this case doesn´t just mean admitting to one what one is and wants, in this case honesty is broken down to simple facts such as always let women know when you are attracted to them.[1] This is an important factor, not just for dating, but for life itself.

Honesty is never hiding.

The more honest one is with others, the better one´s life will be. Never confuse honesty with aggression. Sometimes it seems easier to tactlessly point out other people´s flaws and conveniently forgetting one´s own, but that´s not honesty. Honesty is balance. Honesty is allowing others to see the inner you. It´s also allowing others to get close to you, and accepting that not everyone will want to be close to you.

And this is the essence of Organic Seduction. While you might say that the tone is that of the typical “dating master” who believes himself to be better than others, close examination reveals that the tone is also being honest. Confident and honest people are not afraid to share their experiences, and that is certainly the case in this website. Once this is understood the site is even refreshing. It is exactly what modern times need: men committed to honesty and sincerity. And this, friends, is the only aphrodisiac needed.

5 Reasons Men Should Do Yoga

Yoga helps reduce stress, even in the office.

If one were to choose a random yoga studio and walk in, chances are the student and teacher population would tend toward being mostly female. Yoga became popular some years ago and women have had no problem practicing it and fitting this healthy lifestyle into their own routines. However, a superficial scan of an average yoga class reveals the male population is oddly absent. Why is that? It is true that film and other mass media have definitely projected yoga as a “mostly-women” practice but that need not be. Yoga is good for the body, for every body. And anything that is good for the body knows no gender. As mundane as the format might seem, here are 5 reasons men should really consider yoga.

1. Distracts your mind, heals your body.

Pressure can come from any area of life: work, family, study. At some point all of it will generate stress. The idea behind yoga helping an individual cope with stress is both practical and simple: since you focus your energy on moving your body, your mind lets go of the problems, even for just a little while. As is has been discussed before, relieving your mind of problems can help you focus your mind and make more rational decisions.

2. Stretches your muscles.

Yoga posses are famous for being complex and painful. While the stereotype is evidently an exaggeration, yoga does force your muscles to stretch beyond what they normally do. This is healthy, especially for your everyday static lifestyles. Even if one already practices a sport, stretching out muscles will allow you to gather more power and strength in them.

3. Muscle tone

Holding this pose is not easy. Try it.

Yoga is famous for stretching your muscles, but as you stretch you also hold. This “holding” of the positions tones your muscles and gives you great tone and strength.

4. Healthy step out of routine

Practicing any sport or physical activity allows you to step out of your everyday routine and focus your mind on something that is not work or your problems. Yoga, however, has one advantage that few other sports share: you can practice it anywhere. No need for yoga mats or any special gear. In a pinch, you can practice yoga by simply taking off your tie and jacket and stretching a little in your office or space. For hardcore fans there is even an interesting gadget called a “yoga-paw”, which wraps around your hands and feet to give you extra grip on any surface; it´s a particularly smart idea, because it allows anyone to practice yoga, anytime, anywhere.

5. New practices, new horizons

It is a proven fact: daring to experience new phenomenon allows you to expand what is commonly referred to as “your horizons”. In more basic terms, the more new things your brain experiences, the more new information it has to process. This is an extraordinary event for any brain because you keep your mind busy and you keep your mind learning.

These reasons, obviously, apply to both men and women but the main focus of this article is to attempt to interest men in yoga. It is, at the most basic level, an interesting and challenging practice. Also, it does not have to be a heavy investment. There are plenty of affordable apparel stores and websites out there with very reasonable prices. So, maybe, instead of dealing with the stress headache or going home and simply winding down with a beer, how about a 45 min stop at your local yoga studio?

Live, Laugh and Like this video.

Everyone has a friend out there that insists upon sending a ridiculous amount of “funny” videos. I must admit that until recently, most of this humor seemed droll and redundant, nothing that would be worth my time. One must not misunderstand me, I do enjoy a good laugh. I simply did not think that videos of unfortunate individuals would produce the type of laugh I was looking for (healthy and wholesome).

I used to think nothing useful could come from a funny video because they all looked like this.

This held true until recent events made me realize that some (I do not dare say all) “funny videos” are worth, at least, a wholesome grin. What sparked the transformation was a simple event involving one of the most common elements in these videos: a cat.

It was a quiet evening and I was giving a lecture at a friend´s house. It was Q&A time. I was just starting a discussion about life changing moments and attempting to describe what happens in your mind and body when you have an illuminating experience when the unexpected happened: the cat, which had silently sneaked to the headrest behind me, jumped into my lap and into my tea. The following ensued: the cat jumped into the lap of the woman immediately to my right and I jumped into the lap of the woman immediately to my left. After all the “hoo ha” was over, a quiet man in the back said “Maybe that´s what life changing situation should feel like”. We all had a small laugh and I went home.

I was editing the video of the lecture a few days later and was stunned to watch the scene play out. I was stunned because of the timing and the, I will admit, laugh that erupted from me. A strange instinct took hold of me and I cut out those seconds of recording and sent them to the “very funny video” friend and told her this was funny. As soon as I was done, I realized something: what made the video funny was partly my experience, but what made me want to share it was the improbability of it. To me, this represented a great coincidence and a moment that, against all odds, happened to me. I started thinking that maybe that is how people who upload “funny videos” feel: they are ordinary people, well aware that odds are today will be a routine day and then, it happens: they see their usually sleeping cat performing a seemingly impossible feat of acrobatics. It might not impress everyone, but for the owner it was a way of stepping out of routine.

I am not ashamed to admit that curiosity got the best of me on this occasion and I did go onto several websites that “specialize” in videos and pictures. I found some extraordinary examples of the droll and the amusing. I even found one video worth a mention in my next lecture. It was about never allowing a terrible situation to keep one from fulfilling one´s goals, and I´m proud to say that the child in this video is a perfect example of that. I also found a picture that addressed the issue of what a life changing moment is like: the moment when you decide to stop or go. I presented this to the group where the “cat incident” occurred. We all decided it was worth a second to live in that moment, to laugh at the incongruity of it and to likethe “cute picture” on the webpage.

I never thought I´d find such an appropriate image on an entertainment site.

For the Good of the Masseuse

When one becomes immersed in the world of healthy living and in the profession of life coaching, one comes into contact with all sorts of ideas, innovations, philosophies and professions. One of the most fascinating professions is definitely that of the masseuse. Many mock the job and the very idea that touching, rubbing or pressing certain areas of the body can result in the release of tension and stress. This article is not about defending the masseuse; it is about attempting to make an audience aware of the need for practicality in this profession.

An intricate design for an intricate profession

Let us start by jumping straight into the core of the article: the massage table. Most people have at least seen one in a picture or on film. These are the seemingly enormous and odd looking cross between a chair, a bed and a table, with a hole on one end. Most people can become baffled by the design, until seen in use, when it becomes evident that practicality is all that is behind the design of this seemingly strange device. However not everything is as practical as it should be. Further research into the topic reveals that what is commonly referred to as the “portable massage table” trumps the traditional table in practicality and design. As one leading French Massage Boutique simply states: a massage table is to be ergonomic, comfortable and easy to use. The advantage of a portable massage table is that it can be moved, while a fixed massage table is usually difficult to manipulate when needed. [1]

At this moment one is free to ask, why the seeming obsession with the massage table? The answer is simple: the benefits of a good massage are evident. The reduction of stress and the release of tension allow any individual to tackle his or her problems with a more clear and quiet mind. Now, since the benefits of the massage are clear, it should also be clear that the tools available to the masseuse are of great importance. Many times it might not just be a matter of being well trained (although that accounts for most of it), but of having the right tools. Picture if you will: after a long day, one goes home with the weight of a terrible decision to be made in the morning. A massage would clearly help this person focus their energy and creative process in order to make the better decision but the massage is performed, beautifully, while this person is sitting on his or her couch. As soon as he or she gets up, they might feel the tingle of stress start to build up. If, instead, the massage is done on a proper table, the effect might be more long lasting. Why? Simply because the masseuse is ensuring that the body relaxes entirely, which cannot occur when one is holding a sitting position, or when one forcibly turns their neck to one side or the other (because lying face down on an ordinary surface does not allow a person to breath properly).

In conclusion, receiving a massage is certainly a practical way to unwind from the day´s stress. However, let us also keep in mind that in the equation of a massage, the masseuse must also benefit from his or her practical tools. Keep this consideration in mind the next time you find yourself, literally, in the hands of your favorite massage professional.

Whey What?

Diet fads and nutritional wars have been a part of human society for thousands of years. Even back in the Golden Age of Greece there were discussions as to what made a body healthier. It seems that today we find ourselves in the greatest struggle in respects to nutrition. The reality is that the food most people consume is at some point chemically treated and some, is even genetically engineered. It´s also very easy to become highly alarmed when people are told “chemicals” and “engineering” are coming into contact with the food they eat every day. Even if you avoid the, obviously, chemically filled sweets, snacks and processed foods around us, is there any guarantee that the fruits and vegetables you consume don´t undergo similar chemical treatments as everything else? The truth is that they do, and many people have started to look for healthier, chemical free alternatives for their nutrition. Unfortunately it is extremely complicated to completely avoid foods with chemicals in them; there is good news, however, since there are several products available to us today that can make a big difference in our nutrition.

One of them (without meaning to sound too much like a commercial) is whey protein.

Grass fed whey is a healthy chemical free product worth a try.

More specifically we will be talking about grass-fed whey protein. Whey protein is a substance that is healthy for the body´s production of amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, which, in turn, are what help us stay alive. In the case of grass-fed whey, what we have is the same healthy product, but derived from the milk of cows that have only been allowed to feed on grass and are free of any chemical treatment (even the grass is kept pesticide-free). In simple terms: the grass has fewer chemicals, the cow consumes fewer chemicals and people can supplement their protein diet knowing they are not ingesting any extra pesticides or chemicals we don´t actually need in our bodies.

Now, if one delves deeper into this new healthy alternative, one eventually runs into an interesting debate: which is better, whey protein or pea protein? It is an interesting discussion since both substances posses many of the same qualities and amino acids that allow our bodies to become healthier and stronger. This debate arose, evidently, from the side of vegans and even people with milk allergies who still want and need these important substances for their bodies. Regardless of where the research takes you (whey protein has more nutritional value and does not cause an allergic reaction because of its lack of lactose), one thing becomes clear: at the same time that technology has put us in a situation where chemicals are commonplace in our diet, technology has also started to allow us to feed our bodies better. We are, for the first time in a long time, being given a choice: to consume what our generation has always consumed, or to maybe venture out into a healthier nutritional world, impressively devoid of harmful chemicals. This is a wonderful realization and I hope you share it with me.

For those of you who don´t know: whey looks like this.

The Burning Candle

Just as a candle cannot burn without fire, men cannot live without a spiritual life.

Buddha

Is spirituality innate to mankind?

Many people today dismiss anything that has to do with spirituality, arguing that science can and will explain all. Sometimes it´s just easier to oversimplify a concept and conclude that it will all eventually be measured, classified and filed away. Other times, it seems as if some people percieve spirituality as some sort of puzzle which must be solved according to the rules of empirical proof. In these instances, it´s common to see an attempt to “scientifically” prove concepts such as God, Evil, Good, Damnation and Salvation. In reality, either of these radical approaches can yield the wrong result.

In today´s world it does seem like speaking about spirituality leaves many things out but this is only because the term and subject matter of spirituality covers so much that it´s not uncommon to see it as vague or “an easy way out”. It´s easier, sometimes, to assume that nothing is being said when faced with the possibility that everything is being answered. It also seems a common misconception today that spirituality is dead or, more accurately, been supplanted by other concepts, most notably science. The truth is that neither science nor spirituality are at an impasse against each other.

In a very englightening dialogue between Fr. Thomas Keating and Ken Wilber, the later attempts to explain certain aspects of spiritualism. Wilber concludes that what we would call dogma, religion and belief are actually one part of the whole. As limited human beings, we can only ever see and experience things from our perspective, and this means that, very literally, there are many ways of seeing the same object. To this, adds Wilber, we must also take into account that there is the way in which each individual sees the world and the way in which others see this individual. These different perspectives are what would add up to a concept of a whole, or even, a type of universal consciousness.

Taking this into account, we here can conclude that spirituality is an attempt to understand this universal consciousness. This attempt, we must add, also depends on our perspective of ourselves, our lives, our society and their perspective about us. In this sense we can begin to see that while some try to seperate and classify, the solution might just lie in doing the opposite: in the conjuction of terms and ideas, of philosophies and religions, of the particular and the general. Once we begin to understand spiritualism as this conjoining of ideas (many of them contradictory), we begin to understand the complexity of such a subject.

To understand spirituality is to understand the complexity of man

What use is it to understand the complexity of spirituality? The answer is simple: in order to understand our own complexity. In all the time that humanity has existed, one of the common threads is our own instinctual spiritual journey. We might not know where the journey ends, but all of mankind agrees on one thing: the journey exists. Wheather we choose to label it as the path of science, the path of religion or the path of spirituality it does not matter. We are greater than the sum of our physical parts, even to the point were these can matter little, but what can never loose importance is that other side of us. The ephimeral, the spiritual.

What Does Self Help Even Mean?

“People need haircuts, massage, dentistry, wigs and glasses, sociology and surgery, as well as love and advice.”

John O’Neill, Sociology as a Skin Trade

“Love” and “advice” is what one could say lies at the core of what is commonly reffered to as “self help”. This term, although mocked and occasionally dismissed, encompasses many different ideas and activities, all of which are necessary for a person to live an ultimately well balanced and, more importantly, satisfying life. But, what does “self help” mean? I believe an important part of balancing one´s life lies in recognizing the root of our problems and in this same way, one must understand the concept of self help before using it to search for well-being.

Historically speaking, the concept of self-help can be traced as far back as Ancient Greece. Many a Greek penned advice intended to allow an individual to find balance. Examples include Aristotle´s Nicomachean Ethics and Hesiod´s Works and Days. Both books filled with everyday advice on morality, ethics and how to achieve a satisfying and fulfilling life. Closer to our time, the idea of self help became especially popular during the Renaissance. Imagine to live in those times: new continents are discovered, peoples never before seen become a part of every day life in Europe and, more importantly, man´s ability to accomplish anything, coupled with the realization that Europe is a tiny fraction of all the wealth and knowledge to be found in the Universe, make for very fertile land for self help. People want to learn, but they are also thrown off balance as many of the things they took as truths are suddenly questioned.

The Renaissance is really the time when what we understand as self help—“a self-guided improvement”—becomes a widespread idea. Essentially, because of the dramatic changes in society, people reach out (as they always do) and attempt to find this “love” and “advice” that will bring a sense of well being to their lives. The next time we see a rise in the concept and use of self help is in our modern times.

From the Industrial Revolution to the invention of the Internet, the past 200 years have seen great advances in society, but also great setbacks in the development of the self (“In a society dominated by privatization, alienated and divided labor, hyper-subjectivity going hand in hand with mechanist objectivity, and/or possessive individualism” – John O’Neill. Sociology as a Skin Trade. Essays Towards a Reflexive Sociology. ). It´s no wonder Freud needed to exist in the years he did, and it´s also no wonder that today self help, life coaching and spiritual enlightenment are so popular. Humans need balance and a fulfilling life on both the personal and professional level and, today, it sometimes seems easier to achieve one but not the other.

To trace this back to the quote at the top, self help today, can be seen as the searching and giving of “love” and “advice”. This is not the love we have for our husband or wife; this concept of love is closer to the love we have for our brother or sister. People will always recognize their fellow man as being “the same” and, by extension, of being capable of suffering in the same way so it seems only logical that we seek advice and give advice about difficult situations out of “love”, out of the basic recognition that we are the same.

In conclusion, self help is, simply, the need and will to help another person improve their lives and achieve balance. This was true in Ancient Greece, the Renaissance and still holds true today.

The Art of Nothing (except what you carry with you)

Take a close look at the following image. It is, like too many images on the internet today, meant for light hearted fun and amusement. And like too many images on the internet today, it´s easy to rush right by it, sigh a half amused smile and move on with our lives.

For those of you who are not too familiar with Pop culture today, Rambo refers to the main character of the film series with the same name. The many films revolve around the main character defeating an enemy through extensive use of weapons and explosions. This is, as one may call it, a fairly standard action film. Macgyver was a television program that followed the improbable adventures of a US super spy of sorts who had a nack for getting out of trouble with limited supplies (famously a paperclip, a Swiss Army knife and duct tape). Finally, Chuck Norris had recently gained fame for apparently being able to achieve the impossible (such as inmortality, super strength, etc).

Apart from their television and film Pop culture fame, these three characters are defined by one characteristic: at some point they all sufferend intensely in their past. This sets an appropriate mood on screen and motivates the characters beyond what is expected of them. This also is part of what allows them to excell in their field.

Setting the trivia aside I can come to my point: at first glance the image above seems little more than a clever joke about Pop culture. However, after the sigh of laughter fades away, I am inclined to find a more profound meaning.

What do we see in the image? A list of people with their instruments of choice. With each name we pass, the instruments become smaller, more mundane, until finally the instrument dissapears. This implies that the last person on the list uses no instrument but himself. It is in this, that a valuable lesson can be learned.

Other authors have often written about self reliance. A famous example is the 19th century writter Ralph Waldo Emerson, who says, “Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string”. It is precisely when we trust in ourselves that we no longer need any tools outside of ourselves to achieve what we want. It is not always easy to listen to oneself and we often doubt if what we percieve as right is what is right. In truth, this will always be hard to do. We must be completely connected to our inner selves, we must know ourselves and never lie to ourselves in order to be able to trust ourselves. If we achieve this, everything we need to succeed will be within us.

A word of warning: we must always be on the lookout for the difference between self reliance and isolation. The individual that claims to “not need anyone” will never achieve anything worth achieving, while the individual that trusts his own judgement and knows when to give help and when to recieve help will achieve anything he or she proposes. It is not the same thing to be dependent on someone than to be connected to someone and these connections keep us balanced and make our lives worth living.

Ultimately, the lesson to be learned from the image above is this: learn to carry nothing but what is already within you; learn to trust in your inner self and then, you will be able to accomplish anything.

De-stressing Through a Bag-full of Nuts

What person has not felt stress and the reduction of it after eating what is commonly termed as “comfort food”? What person has not recommended or been recommended certain types of food to “keep it all under control”? The impresion that we get from this behavior is that humans seem to be somehow naturally wired to seek out comfort when stressed. This is obvious, who doesn´t want to fell better when under pressure of any kind? What is more amazing about this is that this search for comfort is being found to work not just on a psychological level, but also on a biological one as well.

Assuming this to be true, we seem to have suddenly stumbled onto a world were diving into the gallon of double chocolate ice cream seems quite valid: you´re upset, your body is asking you for the comfort food. The good news is that it has also been found that it´s not just the unhealthy foods that bring comfort. What actually brings the comfort and the sensation of calm are the chemicals found in the food, and their ability to reduce the hormone cortisol, produced by the body when stressed. Does this mean there are healthy alternatives to comfort foods? Yes it does.

The first recommendation is to avoid high fat content foods and try to find high carbohydrate content foods instead. Carbohydrates can be found in bread, pasta and nuts.

Not all comfort foods have to be unhealthy.

In layman´s terms, it is much better to indulge in a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich than three deep fried donuts. On the surface the foods appear similar: “heavier” snacks that can satisfy any craving due to stress. On closer inspection, however, we can see the difference: the deep fried donut is high in fat, while the sandwhich is high in carbohydrates. Both foods will help reduce cortisol, but the sandwhich will do so while not damaging your body due to excess fat.

Another great recommendation is to avoid foods and drinks with caffeine. This means no coffee, no tea (unless caffeine free) and no soda drinks. As an alternative, some claim that a cup of hot chocolate might help. Not only will the warm drink help bring that feeling of comfort, but both the milk and the chocolate will help lower cortisol levels. This drink has the advantage that milk is also high in carbohydrates, which means more energy and a better sense of well being than coffee or tea.

Finally, another choice are nuts. Nuts such as almonds, peanuts and pistachios need only small amounts to give a person a sense of calm and comfort. Only about a dozen nuts are

Carbohydrate rich foods are a healthy alternative to foods rich in fat.

necessary per day, making this both a healthy and an easily accessible choice of comfort food. You can easily carry a little bag of nuts around in your purse or pocket and simply take them out when you feel the stress start to build.

Does this mean these foods eliminate stress altogether? Not really. All they do is help reduce the hormone cortisol, which can have very negative side effects in the body (such as depressing the immune system and making you vulnerable to disease). Learning how to handle stress on a day to day basis is still very much about attitude and learning to manage stressful situations; however, these tips can help keep away the negative effects of succumbing to the unhealthy comfort foods.

Challenge Expectations

“I guess my own aspirations are always to see something interesting, and ideally something that will challenge my expectations and prejudices and show me something new about life, love, art, whatever.”As I read this article a few months ago I kept coming back to this quote. The article, published in “The New York Times” has A.O. Scott discuss the importance, relevance and significance of watching “art films” or, at least, movies that are generally considered of a higher standard than most Hollywood blockbusters. As I delved deeper and deeper in the article I found myself agreeing with Scott about what a good film should do: challenge expectations. In the end, it really does not matter if it is a high budget, low budget, “philistine” or “snob” film, all that matters is that simple truth: challenge expectations.

When I was done with the article I realized that beyond films (which I am passionate about) this truth holds for every aspect of a person´s life. It is easy to see when our life has gone stale and static but it´s always much harder to move beyond this staleness and into a more dynamic lifestyle. Why is this change hard? Mostly, because in the every day routine that can be life, distinguishing between “different” and “different on the outside” becomes very difficult. This is why, I would advise, to take a page from Scott´ book and go ahead and challenge expectations. Think deep and hard about your routine; what do people expect you to do? Sit quietly in your cubicle and type out your reports? Challenge expectations. Stand up every once in a while, engage in a conversation with your neighbor, share your snack chips with someone across the hall or simply wave at people instead of simply nodding.

Challenge expectations.

Do not be afraid, they will never be more than you can handle.

These two words are great advice and you must feel free to pass it around. However, let´s make one thing clear: this does not mean that one day you will not show up for work or decide to run right through every red light you find. To challange an expectation means to bring something new and something meaningful into your life. Running a red light is neither new nor meaningful. Sharing is meaningful, reaching out to someone is meaningful and presenting yourself to your cubicle neighbors can be both new and meaningful.

So, please, keep in mind Scott and hopefully by the end of your day you´ll be wanting to watch some good films and you will have bettered your life through action: challenge expectations.
